The other mindset is that of Faith. Caleb had this mindset. His report wasn’t focused on the giants but on God. All the same conditions were true, all the same giants were in the land just as the other men reported, but Caleb had faith that God was going to bring the victory. As the people turned against God and started complaining because of the evil report, Caleb and Joshua rent their clothes and said to the children of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not” (Numbers 14:7-9). Caleb clearly tells them that the LORD is with them and they are not to fear them. He had faith more than fear. Do you?
When we look again at people’s lives and why they don’t see the power of God in their lives it is because they are living lives of fear, not faith. In missions, how can I, or anyone else step into a country where everything that we want to do is illegal? Because we are simply trusting in God to bring the victory. There are tons of giants in the land of China and I in myself can do nothing, but I am simply going to have the mindset of faith that God has called me into this land and he will carry out great things for His Name sake. Caleb called on the children of Israel to stop being fearful and to trust the Lord and I am calling on the people of God to stop having the mindset of fear, but have faith in God and let’s watch him do a great work in the land.
The story goes on and the children of Israel wanted to stone Caleb and Joshua with stones so the Lord showed up and was angry with the people, and Moses had to ask God to pardon the iniquity of the people, and He did. You see the mindset of fear is sin because you are not wholly following the Lord. All the men who brought the evil report would not see the promised land, but Caleb would. The Lord said “my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it” (Numbers 14:24).
This is where Joshua 14 comes in to play. They are now possessing the promised land and Caleb is ready for his inheritance that the Lord promised. The others who brought the evil report were no longer alive, but the Lord kept Caleb alive. The story is re-told and in this chapter alone it says three different times that Caleb wholly followed the Lord:
- “I wholly followed the LORD my God” (vs.8)
- “thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God” (vs.9)
- “he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel” (vs.14)
Caleb gets his reward and claims his mountain because he wholly followed the Lord and even upon claiming his mountain he had faith that the Lord would be with him and drive out the people as the Lord said. Can it be said of us, that we are wholly following the Lord? Which mindset do you see in your life? Fear or Faith?
