November 2018 Prayer Letter

Dear Pastors, Partners & Praying Friends,

Imagine you were born in a communist country. A country that denies the existence of God. A place where there was a very small chance that you would actually hear the gospel. Thousands are born this way every day in China. But this past Sunday, there was a baby boy born to a Chinese man and women who are followers of Jesus. They are leading the church we started in China. Against all odds, this boy was born into a Christian family. He, Lord willing, will be raised by parents who are in love with Jesus. Parents who every day have to truly live out their faith because of the reality of their surroundings—the reality that his occupation is considered illegal by their government. Oh, praise is to God for the changing of a generation and the work He is doing to change lives in China and around the world.

Please pray or rejoice with us over the following updates:

  • News from China: Another soul was saved this past month in China. Pray for the growth of the church as they disciple these new believers in a growing relationship with Jesus.
  • New Support Update: We have raised an additional 5% of new support this past month which makes a total of 8% raised on furlough. We are at 78% of our new support goal, which means we only need 22% more. We are thankful and blessed by our new partners!
  • Furlough Traveling: Sine our last prayer letter, we have had meetings in: AZ, GA, OH, CA. Again, we were blessed with great meetings and missions conferences. It has been a joy to reconnect with faithful supporters and partner with new ones. There are so many little blessings in traveling and serving God—one of those is making friends all over the country with the same passion of knowing Jesus and making Him known.
  • Family News: Keep my wife in your prayers as she is dealing with a few health problems. Also, we are working on getting all the kids caught up on the doctor’s appointments.

Event Reminder: We will be participating and speaking at the Our Generation Summit in Mt. Sterling, Ohio this coming December 28-29, 2018. This conference is a gathering of Christians endeavoring to further the Gospel of Christ. This conference is open to individuals, couples, families, and church groups. If you are interested in missions, I hope that you will plan to attend. For more information contact us or visit: www.ogsummit.com.

Thank you! We know that we couldn’t do anything without the help of God’s people. Thank you for giving, praying and being a part of our “China Ministry” team. We are especially fond of you! Let us continue pressing forward so that we can know Jesus and make Him known!

Mark

October 2018 Prayer Letter

Dear Pastors, Partners & Praying Friends,

Please pray or rejoice with us over the following prayer request and praise reports:

  • More souls saved in China! Praise Jesus. Since we have been gone from China, the local church we were able to establish there has reported that they have seen at least six souls saved! Pray for them as they teach, baptize and disciple these new believers.
  • Support—praise the Lord—we have raised 3% of our new support goal with more new churches partnering with us. We are still waiting to hear from many more churches who have shown interest in partnering with us. We only need 27% more. Keep praying with us about this, as this is one of our goals while we are on furlough.
  • We have been able to be a part of some incredible missions conferences recently. Also, we are humbled to be able to present and preach in so many great churches. People are responding to the messages and the altars are being used. God is truly opening doors for our ministry. Since being home on furlough, I have been able to travel to GA, TN, SC, NC, and TX for meetings. My family has been able to travel to some of those meetings with me.
  • We were recently in a meeting that focused on “China”. The four other families out of our home church going to China and in States were able to attend it as well. We had a great time together! The church took us all on for support! Amen! If you would be interested in hosting a “China Missions Day/Conference/Revival,” please contact me.
  • Family—please pray for our children’s schooling: the two oldest children have started homeschool; our third oldest started preschool at a supporting church. The twins are some of happiest babies you will meet, pray for them to continue to grow healthy. Also, pray for my wife—who does a fantastic job—as she juggles these responsibilities: wife, mom, teacher, missionary wife, etc.
  • Praise that I was able to teach a course on “Persecution” at the Our Generation Training Center—a missionary training center at our home church. We had a great time together and I pray that the truths we studied will better prepare the students to take the gospel to the world.

September 2018 Prayer Letter

Dear Pastors, Partners & Praying Friends:

Furlough is going great. We are getting rest, being encouraged, growing, learning, and busy about the Lord’s work.  We can say with the Psalmist, “I have set the Lord always before me: Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: My flesh also shall rest in hope.” (Psalm 16:8–9)

Prayer & Praise Requests: Please pray or rejoice with us over the following:

  • Our needed increase in support. We need about 30% more to reach our new target amount before we return next year, Lord willing. Praise the Lord for one new church that has already voted to partner with us and for the Lord providing our needs in a strong way.
  • As a part of the North Korean Initiative, we were able to purchase about 120 SD cards that were loaded by a friend with Korean Christian material and sent over the Chinese and North Korean bordered to be distributed among the North Koreans. Praise the Lord they made it into the country. Pray they will be used to plant seeds of the gospel in the hearts of the people and for souls to be saved.
  • Pray for safety and blessings as we travel to report about what God has done in China and raise up new laborers for the great harvest field of China and the world. In our travels, we have already come in contact with families and young people who are interested in getting involved in missions.
  • Pray as we reach out to the Chinese community we meet as we travel.

Upcoming Event: We will be participating and speaking at the Our Generation Summit in Mt. Sterling, Ohio this coming December 28-29, 2018. This conference is a gathering of Christians endeavoring to further the Gospel of Christ. This conference is open to individuals, couples, families, and church groups. August 2018 Prayer Letter

Dear Pastors, Partners & Praying Friends:

We want to praise the Lord for safe traveling over the past month. We have arrived safely in America. Also, we want to praise the Lord for all the wonderful things God has done over the past eight years of ministry in China. We are blessed to be a small part of all that God is doing in China.

Furlough 2018-2019: We left China on July 24th, took an intermission in South Korea for almost a week and then finally arrive back in the States on the 30th. After arriving, we were able to get set up, which went really quickly because of the help of our home church and yokefellows. The following two weeks we stayed local and visited with our home church, family and now we are starting to travel and report on all that God has done in China. Also, we are seeking to increase our support—thus we need about 30% more to reach our new target amount. We have already been in two new churches and excited to be in many more. If you are interested in having us in to present our ministry in your church, please contact me via email: mark@chinaministry.org.

Blessings:

  • The ministry in China is doing well and there has been two more souls saved since we have left. They have also had great attendances in their Sunday morning services.
  • It has been wonderful to spend time with the other Project China missionaries out of our home church that are also in the States. God is building a wonderful team of missionaries.
  • We have been reconnected with friends and family. Also, we are making new friends and meeting new family members!
  • A new ministry partnered with us to provide audio Bible devices in the Chinese language. These devices also have sermons and we can add our own content.
  • We have been able to get involved in teaching at our home church, participate in different events and receive more training through our mission board and the training center.
  • I was able to meet a Chinese man who was participating in an ESL class at our home church and started studying the Bible with him in Chinese. Please pray for his salvation.

The North Korean Initiative: This is a unique opportunity to reach North Korea with the gospel from China through utilizing “men, materials, and technology”. Please pray as we plan!

  • Men: To plant churches along the border with the intention to reach and train ethnic Korean Chinese citizens to go into North Korea as evangelists and church planters.
  • Material: To produce and translate material (written, audio, and video) into the Korean language.
  • Technology: Use technology in creative ways to smuggle the Gospel material into North Korea.

Thank you! We know that we couldn’t do anything without the help of God’s people. Thank you for giving, praying and being a part of our “China Ministry” team. We are especially fond of you! Let us continue pressing forward so that we can know Jesus and make Him known!

July 2018 Prayer Letter

Dear Pastors, Partners & Praying Friends:

We have been working towards this month for a long time, as we are busy turning over all of our responsibilities to the workers here. We are excited about this next step in our ministry and thankful for all the Lord has done.

FURLOUGH 2018-2019

Furlough: We have been serving as church planting missionaries to the country of China since 2009. We have learned the Chinese language, seen souls saved, baptized and discipled. We have planted a church and trained two young men for the ministry. Now we are turning it over to national leadership. Thus, we are planning, Lord willing, to take our first year-long furlough at the end of this month. This will put us at almost eight years on the field. The Lord has done so much in our lives and ministry and we are excited about sharing all of it with local churches in America.

Ministry: The Lord has provided us with two Chinese young men that have been training in our ministry. One of the young men, Charles, will be pastoring the church in my place. He is a godly young man who has been a great example to the church and has proven to be a servant leader. The other young man, Lebron, will be the assistant pastor. God also has really been working in His life and he continues to grow in the faith. Please be in prayer with us as these men lead Dalian Grace Baptist Church.

Meetings: We are looking to book meetings and mission conferences for this furlough (August 2018 – July 2019) so that we can report about what God has done in China, seek to raise more support for the growing ministry in China, and raise up new laborers for this great harvest field. We know that many churches plan in advance, therefore we wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to plan with you if you are interested in having us in to present our ministry in your church. If you are interested, please contact me via email: mark@chinaministry.org.

Future: Lord willing, after our furlough we will be returning to China on this amazing journey. Rest is needed—but we are begging God to allow us to return energized and ready to do greater things because there is still so much more to be done. There is are still more Chinese souls to be reached with the gospel, there are more people to be discipled, and men to be trained for ministry—all because Jesus is worthy to receive the reward of His suffering. Pray that we will be able to return full of passion for the glory of God with an army of supporters (prayer and finances) behind us and other families by our side that are willing to serve on the frontlines, no matter the cost.

Thank you! We know that we couldn’t do anything without the help of God’s people. Thank you for giving, praying and being a part of our “China Ministry” team. We are especially fond of you! Let us continue pressing forward so that we can know Jesus and make Him known!

June 2018 Prayer Letter

Dear Pastors, Partners & Praying Friends:

Every month as I sit to write this letter, I am reminded of God’s goodness to me and the great need to do so much more. There is a spiritual battle taking place daily, but we are on the winning side. It is humbling to think of how God is working and at the same time to realize our weaknesses for the task at hand. I can do nothing but to utterly rely on Him for everything as we go forward.

A Christian Wedding in the Capital: I had the honor to go to Beijing and officiate the wedding of one of the young men that I had the privilege to help train in the Lord. It was a wonderful ceremony and witness to their lost family and friends. Please pray for them as they desire to serve the Lord in whatever capacity is necessary. The church they were attending has slowly been taken over by the government and many unacceptable changes are taking place. (Also, the wedding wasn’t allowed to be hosted at the church because I was the officiator, so it was moved to a nearby restaurant.)

10,000 John and Romans Delivered: We were able to successfully purchase and print 10,000 Chinese John and Romans in-country. We have already received this shipment and started distributing them locally and to other churches in other cities.

Another Pastor Wants Training: The Lord has opened the door for us to help train another Chinese man who wants to turn his “college fellowship” into a church. He was referred to us by one of our founding members (the one who was just married) and he has come to our city twice already to meet with me and for training. Also, we have sent a team to help him for a couple days in his city. We are excited about this new relationship and helping him to establish a local church in his city, Lord willing. Please pray for this young man whose English name is also “Mark”.

Police Visited Our Location: We had a small problem with the police this past month. They visited both of our rented locations during what seemed to be a routine check in our building. We weren’t having service at the time, nor was I present at the time, but two of the missionary wives and their teachers were there studying Chinese and one of the Chinese pastors. After asking a few questions about who was renting the location, etc., they went on their way but wanted follow up done about our business. (Thankfully, we didn’t have anything visible that would distinguish our space as a “church building” from a normal conference room or classroom.) Thus, over a few days we had to provide the business information we use to rent this office space. They seemed to be satisfied with what was presented. For the week following, we didn’t use the space during the day to study (but met at a coffee shop) and we also met in houses for our Wednesday and Sunday services because they were still checking other businesses in our building. So even though we decided to change things up for a week, the Word of God never ceased to be preached. The following week, we returned to using our original location without any more problems, so far.

Furlough Reminder: Lord willing, we will be taking our first year-long furlough at the end of July—landing in the States on July 30th. We are looking to raise much needed new support and to inform our supporters about the work that has been accomplished. If you are interested in partnering with us, please contact me.

Thank you! We know that we couldn’t do anything without the help of God’s people. Thank you for giving, praying and being a part of our “China Ministry” team. We are especially fond of you! Let us continue pressing forward so that we can know Jesus and make Him known!

May 2018 Prayer Letter

Dear Pastors, Partners & Praying Friends:

Thank you for praying for our family and ministry here in China. God is still on the move. All the glory to Him! We are humbled to report the following:

Salvations: Since our last prayer letter, we have seen 7 more people make professions of faith at the church. One was a Korean college student living in our city. When she visited our church, it was the first time she had ever attended a church. After her third time coming, she got saved. Another was a young man who we have been studying the Bible with for a long time. He was involved in a weekly Bible study with the assistant pastor of the church. Finally, he understood the gospel and put his faith in Jesus. Amen!

Baptisms: We had two baptismal services since our last prayer letter as well. There was a total of 8 people baptized between the two services. One of those who was baptized was our second oldest daughter! Praise the Lord!

Membership: The church has also added 11 new members to its membership. We are excited about this as the church has been growing. (At the same time, we have been saying, “Goodbye” to many members who are moving away for work or other reasons.)

10,000 John and Romans: We put a need out on Facebook for wanting to print 10,000 Chinese John and Romans in-country. The need was met almost instantly as God’s people gave. A church contacted us and wanted to help purchase all 10,000. The Chinese scriptures are in the process of being printed. Our goals are to: (1) use these copies of John and Romans to freely given them out to anyone who wants one; (2) have a relationship with a printer that will print the Scriptures for us even as the restrictions on Bibles tighten; (3) use these copies in evangelism.

Furlough: Plane tickets are purchased for our upcoming furlough! Lord willing, we will be taking our first year-long furlough at the end of July—landing in the States on July 30th. We are looking to raise new support and inform our supporters about the work that has been accomplished. If you are interested in having us in or partnering with our ministry, please contact me.

Internship: The Francis family from our home church, who was interning here for six-months, has finished their on-the-field internship and has returned to the States to start deputation. They did a fantastic job while they were here and we are excited about them coming back to China as church-planting missionaries. They are a family worthy supporting in prayer and financially.

Thank you! We know that we couldn’t do anything without the help of God’s people. Thank you for giving, praying and being a part of our team, Project China. We are especially fond of you! Let us continue pressing forward so that we can know Jesus and make Him known!

April 2018 Prayer Letter

God is on the move. The gospel is going forward, people are believing, lives are being changed, and many great things are happening, even in the midst of speculation about a new wave of persecution coming in China.

Once again, thank you for praying for boldness! The Lord continues to grant your requests and gives us much boldness to preach Jesus. Here are a few more ways that your prayers are continuing to be answered:

  • In the past four weeks, we have seen 11 people make professions of faith (including the two mentioned last month). A lady brought her ex-husband and he was saved. A father came with his family and he trusted in Christ. A divorced woman with a young daughter came and placed her faith in Jesus. Hallelujah!
  • We have seen at least one person saved every Sunday for the past four weeks after the morning service. Everyone at the church is excited and anticipating who will be saved next. Church members are bringing their family members to hear the gospel.
  • One of the 11 was our second oldest daughter who after the service one Sunday morning tapped my side and sincerely said, “I am ready to believe in Jesus now.” Praising God for saving her!
  • Our Easter activities and Sunday Easter service went extremely well. We had 100 people (our highest for a service) in attendance on Sunday morning, mainly adults, and 4 people made professions that day.

Thank you! We know that we couldn’t do anything without the help of God’s people. Thank you for giving, praying and being a part of our team, Project China. We are especially fond of you! Let us continue pressing forward so that we can know Jesus and make Him known!

March 2018 Prayer Letter

One of the great joys of being on the mission field is to see God radically change people’s lives and see them changed forever. Glory to the God of our salvation!

Thank you for praying for boldness! The Lord granted your requests and gave us much boldness over the Chinese New Year holiday. Here are a few ways that the prayer was answered:

  • Our American teammates were able to live with some Chinese families in the villages and did the best they could to share the gospel with others.
  • One day we purposefully went out to a random village to share the gospel. Our two teams were both invited into houses and boldly preached the gospel.
  • The assistant pastor, myself and others went visiting people’s homes to “pay a New Year call” and used this cultural visiting time to share the gospel inside of Chinese people’s homes. Jesus was made known.
  • After one of our recent services, I asked those who wanted us to pray for their salvation to raise their hands. Two ladies did and after the service one lady placed her faith in Jesus. Praise God!
  • The father of one of the young men training has been attending our church on and off for over a month. Before he was to return to his hometown upon the end of the holidays, I asked him to come to the church so I could explain the gospel face to face. During that meeting, He asked the Lord to save him.

Thank you! We know that we couldn’t do anything without the help of God’s people. Thank you for giving, praying and being a part of our team, Project China. We are especially fond of you! Let us continue pressing forward so that we can know Jesus and make Him known!

February 2018 Prayer Letter

Happy Chinese New Year! We are thankful the Lord gave us another year to serve Him in China. We are happy to be spending this Chinese New year with Chinese friends who are like family to us now.

Family Update: Praise the Lord, again, for the healthy birth of our twins and my wife’s safety in the delivery. The babies are healthy and growing and my wife is slowly recovering and adjusting to being a family of seven! Praise the Lord. Our other girls are also doing well and have been great in being flexible and adjusting to our new way of life. Also, we are so thankful for the team we have here who has been a huge help and blessing to us over the past month.

Chinese New Year Outreach Update: Chinese New Year is in February this year. Every year before the holiday and before everyone returns to their hometowns we try to host a special service at the church where we make Chinese dumplings. This is a traditional thing to do at this time of year. It has been a fun activity every year, but this year was our biggest turn out with over 70 people attending our activities on Sunday. There were several first-time visitors and many unbelievers who heard a gospel message about “What makes Jesus different?”. Pray for their salvation.

Pray For Boldness: Many, if not all, of our church members, will be spending time with their families over the coming holidays. Please pray that they will have the boldness to preach the gospel to their unbelieving family members and friends. Also, our American teammates will be spending the holidays with different Chinese families (some are in the villages), so pray that they will be a bold witness as well.

Thank you! We know that we couldn’t do anything without the help of God’s people. Thank you for giving, praying and being a part of our team, Project China. We are especially fond of you! Let us continue pressing forward so that we can know Jesus and make Him known!
